He was the second of three children. David and Elizabeth, his parents, were actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. He was an orphan at the age of three. He attended the university of Virginia. In 1827, he enlisted in the United States Army. Following his Army service, Poe was admitted to the United States Military Academy of West Point, but he was again forced to leave for lack of financial support. From 1831 to 1835, Edgar Allan Poe lived in Baltimore, where his father was born, with his aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter, his cousin Virginia.
